12월 1일 동물자유연대는 테드 립만 주한 캐나다 영사에게 하프물범 사냥 중단에 대한 관심과 협조를 촉구하는 공개 서한을 발송하였습니다. 부디 대한민국 국민들이 캐나다의 하프물범 사냥을 비난하고 반대한다는 사실을 캐나다 정부에 전달해 주시기를 바랍니다.

Dear Mr. Lipmann,

This letter is in regards to Canada’s annual commercial seal hunt. We are horrified to learn that Canadian Government allows sealers to beat and skin hundreds of thousands of animals every year. These defenseless animals are clubbed and smashed in their skulls, and often get skinned while they are still conscious.

In the wake of the 27 nation European Union banning its trade in products of commercial seal hunts, Canada is trying to use Korea as a dumping ground of products of cruelty, claiming animal welfare is not a concern in our country. However, many consumers in Korea are already consciously rejecting products of cruelty, and are confident that there is no market for the brutality here.

Korean Animal Welfare Association is determined to never let our country perpetuate the cruelty of commercial sealing. In December 2010, KAWA and Humane Society International successfully held a joint press conference protesting the commercial seal hunt in Canada. With the release of the website “Saving Seal” in March 21, 2011, we officially began our campaign to protest importing seal products from Canada. We have successfully convinced 6 pharmaceutical companies to replace harp seal oil with other ingredient in manufacturing their omega 3 supplements and many shopping malls to stop carrying the harp seal products. Also, we helped increased the awareness of the harp seal issue in Korea by campaigning, boycotting and providing public education through the media.

On behalf of people in Korea who are opposed to Canada’s commercial seal hunt, KAWA strongly demands your immediate attention to stop this merciless massacre.

친애하는 캐나다 영사 립만씨,

이 서한은 캐나다의 상업적 하프물범 사냥에 대한 건의입니다. 해마다 캐나다 정부가 수백만 마리의 하프물범들이 몽둥이로 내리쳐져 산 채로 껍질이 벗겨지는 방법으로 도축되는 것을 허가한다는 사실에 대해 대한민국 국민들은 경악을 금치 못하고 있습니다.

유럽 연합의 하프물범 무역 금지 조치에 따라 캐나다는 상대적으로 동물복지 의식이 약하다고 판단하여 한국을 잔인함의 산물인 하프물범 제품의 하치장으로 만들려고 노력하고 있습니다. 그러나 벌써 많은 한국의 소비자들은 하프물범 제품의 구매를 반대하고 있으며, 이 제품들이 이 땅에 설 자리가 없음을 확신하고 있습니다.

동물자유연대는 대한민국이 캐나다 하프물범 사냥의 영구화에 기여하는 것을 막는 일에 최선을 다하고 있습니다. 2010년 12월 동물자유연대는 휴메인 소사이어티 인터내셔날과 함께 캐나다의 하프물범 사냥의 잔인성을 알리기 위한 기자회견을 성공적으로 개최하였습니다. 2011년 3월 캠페인의 웹사이트를 공식적으로 연 것을 시작으로 동물자유연대의 하프물범 사냥반대 운동은 박차를 가하게 되었고, 6개의 국내 제약회사들이 하프물범 오일을 오메가 3 제품에 사용하지 않는 것을 공식화시켰으며, 온라인 몰에서 하프물범 제품 판매를 중단하도록 설득하였습니다. 또한, 캠페인을 통해 하프물범 사냥의 잔인성을 홍보하여 대중의 인식 변화에 기여하였습니다.
